Chungnam Province is expanding its collaboration with local governments from around the world to address the climate crisis.

Governor Kim Tae-heum, who is visiting Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) to share the Province's leadership policies for achieving carbon neutrality with the world and to enhance international cooperation, attended the opening ceremony of the Local Governments Climate Action Summit held at the Dubai Expo City Blue Zone on the 1st (local time).

The Local Governments Climate Action Summit, organized jointly by the 28th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) and the Bloomberg Philanthropies, underscores the roles and responsibilities of local governments worldwide, as well as the significance of collaboration between national and local governments. It aims to articulate the voices of local governments.

The central themes of the conference encompass four key areas: △regional climate finance innovation, △regional contributions and integration for enhanced global action, △regional energy transition, and △regional resilience and adaptive strengthening.

The event saw the participation of several notable figures, including Governor Kim and representatives from 12 local governments worldwide. Also in attendance were Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations; Michael Bloomberg, a former New York City mayor who is both a businessman and a political figure and currently serves as the UN Special Envoy for Climate Change; Suhail Ahmed Al Mazrouei, the Chairman of COP28; and John Kerry, the United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, among others, who jointly presided over the Local Governments Climate Action Summit.

The event unfolded with an opening speech by Special Envoy Bloomberg, followed by remarks from Chairman Suhail Ahmed Al Mazrouei and a keynote address by Secretary-General Guterres.

The COP, an international conference where heads of state and government, ministers, representatives of local governments, climate activists, civil society representatives, and CEOs of corporations from countries around the world convene annually to discuss climate crisis response strategies, is celebrating its 28th session this year. It took place in Dubai from November 30th and will continue until December 12th.

Governor Kim was specially invited to attend COP28 as a representative of global local governments.

The representation of global local governments includes leaders of major capital cities from countries worldwide, including mayors from Washington, Paris, and Tokyo. Governor Kim is the sole representative from South Korea.

COP28 features the initial disclosure of the results of the 'Global Stocktake (GST)' for the Paris Agreement, and it involves detailed discussions on the scale and establishment of the 'Loss and Damage Fund,' an international fund to support developing countries affected by the climate crisis, as well as its operational methods.
